Elizabeth Marina Moltinari—Libby—learned she had been named a party defendant when she received a phone call from her divorce lawyer, Myron Cohen. Libby was twice divorced from Bang Bang Moltinari; first when she was twenty-two and, as one awakening from a bad dream, realized she was a mobster’s wife.

She had tried to force him to quit. That failure was all but guaranteed, she learned, angrily grinding her teeth against a jaw wired shut.

The second dissolution, the one that took, arrived when she was forty-eight and had fallen for Bang Bang’s olive-skinned purple-eyed bodyguard—Benoit—fresh off the boat from Sicily, who spoke no English but glibly spoke the language of love with hands and mouth. Benoit had vanished from the face of the earth just three months into Divorce II. His evaporation broke Libby’s heart and drove her to drink and beset her to dial up midnight calls to Chicago police detectives, until two men broke into her home at dawn and beat her senseless—a warning against sharing family secrets with non-family. With all that mattered to her but a phone call away, she ordered wine coolers from brunch to dinner, attended four-hour sessions in the salon, and entertained the young men of visiting attractions such as Cirque du Soleil, Ringling Brothers, and the Flying Enigmas, a high wire act from the Ukraine. It was a great hereafter for the woman who had survived a hideous beating, a lesson learned, and she never again spoke to another civil or criminal authority. She wouldn’t even call AT&T to change her cell phone plan, without her lawyer on the line. Now, she had Dupont L. Remis III for that, senior partner in the 650 lawyer Chicago law firm bearing his name second on the masthead. It was Dupont L. Remis III to whom she protested following the call from Myron Cohen, Esq.
